Description:
The Assumption Princess Maiden Monastery was founded in 1200 by Grand Duchess Maria Shvarnovna, the wife of Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest. In the last years of her life, Maria suffered from a serious illness, and wished to build a monastery. When he opened his doors, Maria Shvarnova took tonsure as a nun and received the name Martha. The princess spent the rest of her days in the monastery, where she was buried. Her tomb has survived to this day.
In 1411 the monastery was looted and severely damaged by the Tatars. Life in it stopped for almost a hundred years, up to the time of Prince Vasily III and Ivan the Terrible - under them the monastery was restored.
In Soviet times, apartments, a granary and a workshop were made from the monastery. Today, the monastery has been returned to the church, and restoration work is currently underway.
