Vladimir

Ascension Church

Description:

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord occupies the oldest part of Vladimir - a hill near the Klyazma River. The first mention dates back to 1187 as a monastery located outside the city during the reign of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky.

In 1238, the Mongols burned and destroyed the monastery. But it was restored. The stone church of the Ascension was erected in 1724 with the participation of priest Andrei Grigoriev. Already after the war with Napoleon, in 183, a chapel and a bell tower were erected near the northern part of the cathedral.

Later, the cathedral was not significantly changed and today it is a stone structure with three thrones: in honor of the Ascension of the Lord (the main church), in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin (cold church), in honor of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Mother of God (warm temple). The cold church is painted with icons in Italian style.
