Vladimir - the medieval capital of Russia
Description:
Vladimir region is a unique region. It's all here.
It's full of history. And the term Vladimir Rus is familiar to any Russian schoolboy.
The center of the region - the city of Vladimir - was founded at the end of the 10th century by Vladimir the Red Sun - the Baptist of Russia. Vladimir Monomakh built the first fortress here at the beginning of 12. And his grandson Andrei Bogolyubsky moved the capital of Russia from Kiev to Vladimir. Later, the Metropolitan Department was also located here.
The visiting card of Vladimir is considered the white-stone Golden Gate. Built in the 12th century by analogy with Kiev, the gate served as an uncriminal fortress at the entrance to the city from the west.
The Assumption Cathedral is the cathedral of the Vladimir region. Built in the middle of the 12th century, the temple was once the main cathedral of all Russia. Here they were married to the Grand Duchy Alexander Nevsky, Ivan Kalita, Dmitry Donskoy. In the early 15th century, the cathedral was painted by the brilliant icon painter Andrei Rublev. Here to this day preserved his frescoes, whose age is more than 600 years.
A few steps away is a masterpiece of white-stone architecture – Dmitrievsky Cathedral. There are no analogues to it either in Russia or, perhaps, in the whole world. On the walls of the temple there are more than 500 carved stones. Looking at the white-stone lining of the cathedral, it is difficult to imagine that it was built at the end of the 12th century.
Just 15 minutes drive from the center of Vladimir is a unique temple of the Intercession on the Nerli. It is as if he is hovering over a protected meadow away from the worldly bustle. During the spring flood, the temple stands on a small island surrounded by water. This creation of medieval architects, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, attracts tourists from all over the world.
