Russian Island
Sea of Japan, Peter the Great Bay, Russia
Description:
Russky Island is a large mountainous island in the Sea of Japan, administratively considered part of Vladivostok. The island boasts its glorious history, as well as picturesque views of nature.
Russky Island has a size of 18 by 13 kilometers, and its area is approximately 98 square kilometers. From the mainland, this piece of land is cut off by a strait, through which a powerful cable-stayed bridge more than a kilometer long is thrown. The bridge connects the island with Vladivostok.
The relief of the island is extremely mountainous, and most of its surface is covered with dense broadleaf forests. In Soviet times, Russky Island had the status of a closed territory and was considered the largest training base of the USSR Navy. There are still several active military camps and training centers on the island. The permanent population of the island is more than 5 thousand inhabitants.
In general, Russian is a rather gloomy place. The island is often immersed in thick fog, and the climate here is very cloudy and rainy. However, many tourists are attracted by this harsh beauty.
