Volgograd experimental theater

5 Mir Street, Volgograd, Russia

About the company:

One of the main attractions of Volgograd is the Volgograd State Experimental Theatre, built on December 20, 1915. Originally called the House of Science and Art, the auditorium seated 1,100 people. A beautiful granite staircase led to the front entrance of the institution, and white sculptures of lions were placed below. The facade is decorated with bas-relief images on the theme of science and art.

The institution housed a library, music classes and a museum of local history. During the revolution, the Tsaritsyn Soviet of Peasants, Workers, Cossacks and Soldiers’ Deputies was located here, and during the civil war - a military hospital. In October 1922, the winter theater season opened in the restored building. The theater itself soon became known as musical-dramatic, and, in addition to the dramatic, it included ballet and operatic troupes.

Beginning in 1933, the troupe became permanent, and the theater was decorated as a separate creative team. In 1989 it was named the State Experimental Theatre. Currently, there is a troupe under the leadership of Otar Dzhangisherashvili, in the repertoire of which about thirty performances.
