Excursion "Stalingrad frontiers". The battlefields of the 64th Army

Author's excursion dedicated to the heroic defense of Stalingrad by the troops of the 64th Army.

As it happens, the 64th Army is less known in the history of the Battle of Stalingrad than its right-hand neighbor, the 62nd Army, defending the center and north of the city. But the contribution of Shumilov’s army to the victory of the Battle of Stalingrad is clearly underestimated until now. The army went through the crucible of heavy fighting on the borders of the rivers Chira and Don, Myshkova, Chervlena, at the stations of Tingut and Abganerovo, a departure of 74 km. Being in a disadvantageous position, having a stronger enemy against themselves, the troops of the 64th Army did not allow a breakthrough of their defenses under the powerful blows of tank divisions and aviation of the Hitlerites. This won time, so precious for holding the city of Stalingrad in the most difficult period of August - September 1942.

Retreating by order of the headquarters of the front to the internal defensive roundabout, the 64th army entrenched itself in these positions and did not allow the enemy to the stations and crossings of Beketovka and Krasnoarmeisk (Sarepta). Later, in the autumn and winter of 1942, Shumilov’s army constrained by its actions a significant number of enemy forces, which he so lacked to capture the central part of Stalingrad.

This tour will be especially interesting for tourists who want to learn more about the Battle of Stalingrad, who are not enough just to visit the memorial complex on Mamayev Kurgan. The tour route runs from the village of Kuporosny to the height of 128.2, i.e. covers the entire defense area of the 64th Army from the right flank to the left. Tourists will visit and see the famous height of 145.5 Bald Mountain, mark 142.2, the place of the legendary Elkha farm. All these places still keep traces of past bloody battles.

The tour takes place in the suburban zone of the southern part of Volgograd.
