White Lake
Description:
White Lake is located in the western part of the Vologda region. The Russian name comes from a translation from the Vepsian language. The white lake is called due to the light color of the clay, which covers the bottom and when mixed with water gives it a white murky hue. The reservoir has a rounded shape, and its mirror surface area is approximately 1130 square kilometers, making the White Lake one of the ten largest natural lakes in Europe.
On the southern coast of the lake is the city of Belozersk, which has a rich historical heritage. This is one of the ancient cities in Russia that existed in the middle of the IX century. For the first time it is mentioned in the “Tale of Bygone Years”, later it becomes the center of the Bolozero principality.
