Church of Michael the Archangel
Russia, Volgograd region, Gorodische district, Erzovka river, str. Meliorative, D.2
Description:
In 1840, the former Tsaritsyn Church was renamed the Church of Michael the Archangel. Initially, the church building was built of wood. However, in 1890, the building of the temple was very dilapidated and with the blessing of St. John of Kronstadt, the construction of a brick five-domed temple was begun.
During the Soviet period (in 1937), the church was closed and regained religious status only in 1990. By this time, the church building was almost destroyed, wall paintings were very badly damaged. However, by the efforts of the Orthodox community by 1996 the church was restored to its original historical appearance. It is especially noteworthy that, unlike the practice of restoration of many religious buildings, the church was not repainted, but managed to restore the original frescoes.
