Temple of Nikita the Confessor

400023, Volgograd, Abganerovskaya str., 110a

Description:

The Church of Nikita the Confessor is the oldest monument of Russian architecture of the XVIII century in Volgograd, preserved to this day. The church is built in the style of the manor temple and has interesting architectural solutions.

The church was built from 1782 to 1795 on the money of Governor Beketov, but was consecrated after his death. Over time, the temple was repeatedly rebuilt, expanded and received its current appearance only in 1901, after the construction of the bell tower.

A feature of the architecture of the building is the placement of the main dome above the altar part of the temple, and not above the central, which gives the building a three-dimensional composition that is rare for churches.

The church continued to work in Soviet times, preserved during the war and today is the oldest surviving building of the city.
