| Description:
Having become a fortified outpost in the south of Russia in the XVIII century, the colony of Sarepta gradually turned into one of the industrial, commercial, scientific and cultural centers of the Lower Volga region. Its history is associated with such major historical events as the uprising of E. Pugachev, the battles for Tsaritsyn and Stalingrad during the Civil and Great Patriotic Wars. Mustard, tobacco, weaving and other industries were developed in Sarepta. Scientists-colonists have achieved great achievements in the field of medicine, physics, chemistry, historical and natural sciences.
Founded by the Germans in 1765 as a religious mission among the Kalmyks, Sarepta today has become the largest museum complex in the Lower Volga region. |
| Building:
The only preserved historical and architectural complex in Russia of the XVIII - XX centuries, associated with the creation of a colony of Moravian brothers-gernhuters. The planning of the colony and its embodiment in construction is an attempt to create on earth Eden - "the city of heaven." |
