Drama theater

About the company:

The Vologda Drama Theatre is one of the oldest in Russia. The official date of its foundation is considered to be November 1, 1849. However, long before that, local residents literally fell ill with the theater. The impetus to the general enthusiasm was the play “The Mermaid”, shown in 1780 by a touring troupe.

In 1849, Kozel philistine, entrepreneur Boris Solovyov came to Vologda and appealed to the city office with a request for permission to open a "free theater" and set aside a place for it. He received such permission, officially fixing the creation of a permanent professional theater. The first performance “Skopin-Shuysky” by N. Kukolnik was given on November 1, 1849.

The long history of dramatic theater has never been smooth and calm: highs alternated with failures, failures were replaced by unprecedented success. Despite everything, the theater staff managed to preserve the beautiful Russian theatrical traditions. The repertoire was always built from works of Russian and foreign classics and modern plays. Many outstanding Russian actors appeared on the stage of the Vologda Theatre.

A new turn in the history of the theater began in 1974, when in honor of its 125th anniversary it received a new modern building. Today, the main stage of the theater is located here. However, the constant search for new creative forms, the desire to expand the repertoire led to the fact that in 2003 the permanent Small Stage was opened, and in 2008 the Chamber Stage.
