Church of Dimitry Prilutsky on Navolok
d. Vologda, Embankment VI Army, 119
Description:
The Church of Dimitry Prilutsky on Navoloka is located on the bank of the Vologda River in the very center of the city. The five-domed church was built in the XVII century in memory of St. Dimitry Prilutsky, the founder of the first monastic monastery in the Vologda region. Today it is an active temple, a compound of the Savior-Prilutsky monastery.
The first temple on this place, in the bend of the river, was laid at the end of the XIV century by a local merchant on the basis of the house in which Saint Demetrius stayed. The temple was repeatedly rebuilt, wooden buildings burned, but the large stone cathedral, which has survived to this day, was completed in 1651.
In the temple there are fragments of frescoes belonging to the era of Peter's Baroque. The frescoes “The Last Judgment” and “Susanna and the Elders” characteristic of the Russian North are especially expressive.
