Church of Elijah the Prophet in Stone

ooh Zasodimsky, 14-b, Vologda, Russia

Description:

The Church of Elijah the Prophet is a monument of the late 17th century. Until that time, the wooden and so-called “cold” church of Ilya the Prophet was part of the complex of the Ilyinsky monastery and was practically the only one that survived the fire during the Polish-Lithuanian invasion of these lands. The church was built in stone at the end of the 17th century. The monastery existed until 1738, after which it was closed, and the church in honor of Elijah the Prophet became a parish.

The church looks very Russian - one-storey, small, simple cubic shape with a touching dome. The interior is also not luxurious. But it is the rigor and stinginess of the design that give the temple charm, here you feel a secret sense of integrity and chastity.
