The Church of John the Forerunner
Russia, Vologda region, Kirillov district, Kirillov city, Kirillo-Belozersky monastery.
Description:
The Church of John the Forerunner from the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery was built in the XVI century. It was built from 1531 to 1534. It belongs to the Ivanovo monastery. The funds for the construction of this temple were allocated by Vasily the Third. In 1528 he visited the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery together with his wife Elena Glinskaya. They prayed for a message from their heir. Therefore, it is assumed that the Church of John the Forerunner is dedicated to the birth of Ivan the Fourth, the future Ivan the Terrible.
The Church of John the Baptist was built simultaneously with the Church of the Archangel Gabriel. Their style is very similar, so it is suggested that the churches were built by the same people. Over the years of its existence, the Church of John the Baptist has been rebuilt many times, so its modern appearance is not very similar to the one that was built. The church is in emergency condition and needs restoration.
