The Church of John the Baptist in Grove
Russia, Vologda, is located in the Pushkin kindergarten.
Description:
The oldest mention of the existence of the Church of John the Baptist in Vologda dates back to 1618. During a thunderstorm that occurred on May 26, 1698, the wooden church completely burned down, and the bell tower, which was nearby, due to the proximity to the burning church was cut down. The laying of a stone church in the name of the prophet John with a chapel in honor of St. Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow, took place on May 23, 1710, but when the church was completed and consecrated, it is not known exactly.
The frescoes in the church date from a fragment of the inscription preserved on the southern wall in 1717. It is assumed that the author of the frescoes was Fedor Ignatiev.
In 1924, the church of John the Forerunner was closed for worship and transferred to the Vologda Museum. The temple was one of the most valuable monuments of the city, which allowed to preserve unique paintings.
Today, the Church of John the Baptist is included in the monuments under state protection.
