Church of the Meeting of the Lord
Description:
The Church of the Meeting of the Lord is one of the main architectural sights of the city. The church building was built during the XVIII-XIX centuries and is designed in various architectural styles. It is now an inactive temple.
The Church of Cretenia existed on the shore of Vologda since the XVII century. It is assumed that earlier on this site there were several wooden churches or one temple with several thrones. In memory of this, next to the wall of the Church of Cretnia memorial crosses are installed.
The construction of the current church dates back to the XVIII century, when a spacious two-storey building was erected, gravitating in style to the brightest examples of Russian Baroque. The cubic building is crowned with five graceful bulbs of domes, the main facade is decorated with decorative elements lined with brick, and also lined with tiles.
To the church building was later added a refectory, crowned with a high bell tower, which was rebuilt in the middle of the XIX century. Today, the pseudo-Gothic bell tower with a high spire is the hallmark of Vologda.
