Church of Varlaam Khutynsky

zasodimsky street, 14a, Vologda city, Vologda region

Description:

The first church was built in the XVI century. At first it was a small stone monastery, which was eventually rebuilt. In its place in 1780, a new monastery was built. The money for this good cause was allocated by the merchant Uzdennikov. The name of the architect who created the project has not survived to this day. Historians suggest that this master was from the capital, St. Petersburg. This is evidenced by the style of Russian classicism, in which a new church was built. It was a two-story building. On the west side there is a bell tower with a bell, ending with a thin spire. On the opposite side, huge vases with stucco garlands were invented on the roof of the church. In some ways, this style is inherent in secular buildings.

One very interesting fact is connected with the church of Varlaam Khutynsky. Vologda is considered the birthplace of the famous writer Varlaam Shalamov. His parents lived near the temple and often went there to receive communion. When the boy was born, he was immediately named after the saint.
