Ferapont
village Feropontovo, Kirillov district, Vologda region
Description:
The history of the Ferapontov monastery begins from the beginning of the XIV century. In 1397, two monks came to the Vologda region to found a monastery. They created the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery, but one monk did not want to lead the temple together and he left.
It was the monk Ferapont, who opened his own monastery and called it his name. First, a wooden church was built, which after the death of Ferapont was made brick by his disciple, the Monk Martinian. Thanks to him, the monastery became famous all over the world. The kings and the scribes visited him.
The Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady is considered the oldest building of the monastery. It is noteworthy that in 1502 it was painted by Dionysius, a famous artist of that time. It completely covered the temple with an area of more than 600 square meters with frescoes, which have no analogues in any monastery in Russia. In this cathedral a few decades ago opened a museum of frescoes.
