Deaf Tower of the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery

Russia, Vologda region, Kirillov district, Kirillov city, Kirillo-Belozersky monastery

Description:

The deaf tower of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery was built in the XVI century. It belongs to the Ivanovo monastery. Of the four towers located on the fence of the Ivanovo Monastery of Glukhai, it is the only remaining tower. It is also called the boiler house or waxboy. The tower was not a pass, so, apparently, hence the name "deaf".

The second name of the tower appeared due to the fact that at the bottom of the tower there was a slaughterhouse, and next to the tower lived monks engaged in this craft. The monks lived in the so-called waxing tent, which adjoined the Deaf Tower. In the slaughterhouse, the monks beat wax and made candles, which was an incredibly necessary occupation in times of lack of electricity.
