Vologda

Stone bridge

Russia, Vologda, is located between Mira Street (passes into Victory Avenue) and Maria Ulyanova Street (exits to Revolution Square).

Description:

Stone Bridge is a pedestrian street-bridge over the Zolotukha River in the city of Vologda. The bridge was built in 1789-1791. It was designed by the provincial architect P.T. Bortnikov. Near the bridge built four round three-storey towers - two southern and two northern, as well as adjacent to them commercial premises with stepped facades.

All these buildings together with the bridge were part of a single architectural ensemble. In the 1820s, shopping arcades were added to all four towers along the river, but at the end of the XIX century, in connection with the construction of the Hermitage and Passage hotels, both southern towers were dismantled. And the ensemble was broken.

In 1936, under Soviet rule, the Stone Bridge was paved, and it became the first improved pavement in the city of Vologda.
