The oblique tower of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery

Russia, Vologda region, Kirillov district, Kirillov city, Kirillo-Belozersky monastery

Description:

The oblique (guard) tower in the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery was built in 1662. It belongs to the towers of the New Town, a later part of the monastery. The tower has survived to our time, but in a modified form. It is assumed that it was much higher than it is now. In the XVIII century, the Oblique Tower collapsed, it was not restored to full growth, but left to a height equal to the height of the fence. At this time, small changes were made to the masonry of the tower walls and the inner gate of the tower was completely laid.

The name "slanting" at the tower appeared due to the fact that the entrance through this tower was carried out not at a right angle relative to the roof of the tower, but had a slight skew. This is the name of this tower.
