Description:

Cathedral hill is a historical place, a hill on the right bank of the Vologda River near the Sophia Cathedral.

During the time of Ivan the Terrible, this place was chosen for the construction of the Vologda Kremlin, and scientists in the XIX century suggested that Ivan the Terrible was going to build a stone palace on the Cathedral Hill and even laid the foundation for it. The historian and philologist S. P. Shevyrev went further, believing that the basements of buildings on the Cathedral Hill were intended for the famous Liberia - the legendary library of Ivan the Terrible.

Whether it is true or not, no one knows, but it is reliably known that at different times on the Cathedral Hill there were stone chambers for storing cannon stocks, a storeroom and basement, private houses. At the beginning of the XVIII century, a wooden summer Bishops’ Court was built here – the residence of Vologda archbishops and bishops, which was the administrative and cultural center of the Vologda diocese. Currently, the construction of the bishops’ court is occupied by the Vologda Museum-Reserve.

Today, the Cathedral Hill is landscaped, there is a garden, which is a favorite resting place for Vologda residents. In 2002, a chapel was built on the Cathedral Hill in honor of the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ.
