Dormition Cathedral
Russia, Vologda region, Kirillov district, Kirillov city, Kirillo-Belozersky monastery
Description:
The magnificent Assumption Cathedral is the main temple of the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery. The cathedral has three chapels, acting as separate churches. This is the church of St. Prince Vladimir and the church of Bishop Epiphany of Cyprus. And also the church of Abbot Kirill Belozersky.
The Assumption Cathedral did not immediately turn into a majestic cathedral that delighted more than one generation of people. In the XIV century there was a small wooden church, it was built under Kirill Belozersky, then a larger cathedral was erected, which accommodated more people. But in the second half of the XV century (the year is not exactly known) the cathedral burned down in a fire. The stone Assumption Cathedral was erected in 1497.
The Assumption Cathedral absorbed the architectural style of North-Eastern Russia, mixed with the great Italian architectural school. Inside the cathedral preserved a unique easel and monumental painting of the XV-XVII centuries, especially expressive in the design of the iconostasis of the cathedral.
The XX century was the century of restoration for the cathedral. Restoration work continues now, re-creating the appearance of the cathedral in the initial form when it was built, preserving every detail.
