Russia, Vologda, 21 Lermontov Street.

Description:

Vologda Regional Universal Scientific Library named after I.V. Babushkin has a long history. Once called the Soviet Public Library, it opened on February 9, 1919 in the former building of the Noble Assembly (now Lermontov Street, 21). The library fund was formed due to the nationalization of libraries from noble estates, libraries of the Vologda Theological Seminary and the Vologda provincial male gymnasiums. Books were also made by citizens from private libraries.

Separate copies of books were sent to Vologda from the Totem Savior-Sumorin Monastery, from the library of the Velikoustyuzh Seminary, the Michael-Arkhangelsk Monastery (Velikiy Ustyug), local church parishes, the gendarme administration, and also from Petrograd. By the time of opening the Public Library fund was about one and a half thousand volumes.

In 1964, the library was named after fellow revolutionary Ivan Vasilyevich Babushkin. At the same time, the library receives the status of a state scientific library of a universal profile.

Today, the library operates both in real and virtual mode, it also houses a center for teaching computer literacy. Various scientific societies operate at the library.
