Monument to Army General I.D. Chernyakhovsky
Description:
The monument to the general was opened on May 9, 1977 in Vilnius at the confluence of Vilnius residents, guests of the city and soldiers of the city garrison. The monument to Chernyakhovsky is represented by a full-length sculpture, in an open overcoat and without a headdress. The eyes of the Soviet general were directed to the west. The author of the monument was the sculptor N.V. Tomsky.
During the rise of nationalist movements in Lithuania in the early 1990s, the monument was dismantled by Vilnius authorities. Despite the opposition of local authorities, the head of the city department of culture Ivan Chukhnov, with the support of the local garrison, managed to save the monument from destruction and moved it to Voronezh, where he found a new homeland. There, the monument stood in wooden packaging for two years, while the public of Voronezh collected money for a new pedestal, and was erected again in 1995.
