Monument to I.A. Bunin

Buninsky Square, at the crossroads of Plekhanovskaya and Ordzhonikidze streets, Voronezh

Description:

“Against the background of Russian modernism of the beginning of the century, the work of I. A. Bunin stands out as good, old literature,” wrote a contemporary of the writer Y. Eichenwald about Bunin. His lines are tried old coinage, his handwriting is the clearest in modern literature. Reading Bunin, we are convinced how much poetry in our prose and as ordinary is akin to great. Therefore, in 1990, the Government of the Russian Federation decided to build a monument to I. A. Bunin, who, by the way, is the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The author of the monument was sculptor Alexander Burganov, professor of the Moscow State Art and Industrial Academy named after S. G. Stroganov, and the granite pedestal was designed by a group of Voronezh architects. The monument was donated to the city from the Voronezh Bank and was installed on October 13, 1995 in Voronezh in the square, which was called "Buninsky", in honor of the 125th anniversary of the birth of the writer and poet.

Bunin is depicted in a difficult hour for him - the hour of parting with Russia. The poet sits on a fallen tree, his posture symbolizes anxiety and hope. There is an open book on the tree next to it. At the feet of Bunin is a dog - a symbol of the forever departing nobility, symbolizing loneliness.

Interestingly, Bunin’s works are very rich in various forms of allegory, symbols. Symbolism is found in the writer almost everywhere: in the titles of stories, in its plot, in composition, and in the figurative system. Symbolism in Bunin stories is an integral part of them, becoming a kind of tool in the hands of the author, helps him to emphasize his thoughts and at the same time create his own special mood in the story, different from other writers.

And recently in the square, where the monument was installed, work was carried out on the improvement of the territory. Here, trees were put in order, new pavement slabs were put in place, new lighting was made, benches and urns were put in place.
