Chernyakhovsky Square
p. General Chernyakhovsky, Voronezh, Voronezh region 394000, Russian Federation
Description:
Chernyakhovsky Square is the starting point from which acquaintance with the city begins for everyone who arrives in Voronezh by rail. The square bears the name of army general Ivan Danilovich Chernyakhovsky, twice a hero of the Soviet Union, who led the operation to liberate Voronezh from German troops. On one side the square adjoins the station, and on the other - has a semicircular border formed by several buildings. They were built by the forces of prisoners shortly after the end of the war and were among the first in the destroyed city.
The square received its current name in 1949, at the same time it was decided to install a monument to General Chernyakhovsky. Work on the monument began, but when it came to installation, it was forgotten. The monument was erected only to put down almost half a century - in 1993. In the center of the square there was a statue of a military general, but not the one that was originally planned. The monument was moved here from Vilnius.
