Lenin Square

lenin Square, Voronezh, Voronezh Region 394000, Russian Federation

Description:

Lenin Square is one of the oldest squares of Voronezh. It appeared at the end of the XVIII century and was the center of the horse trade, which gave it its first name - Horse. In the XIX century in this area there is an active construction - there is a salt shop and drinking establishments, a water tower that has not survived to our days. By the 1880s, the horse trade ceased and the square was called Starokonnaya. By the beginning of the XX century, the square is divided into two parts: the southern side remains trading, and the northern one acquires administrative and social significance.

In 1936, the largest building in the city was built on the square - the House of the regional party committee and the regional executive committee, in front of which a few years later a monument to Lenin was erected. And in 1937, the name of the square once again changes - it becomes the square of the twentieth anniversary of October. In subsequent years, active development of the square continues - there are buildings of the musical and dramatic theater and the main city hotel.

The Great Patriotic War caused irreparable damage to the square - the building of the regional party committee and the regional executive committee was blown up, Koltsovsky Square was turned into a cemetery for dead German soldiers and officers. Near the monument to Lenin for some time, the Nazis executed Soviet soldiers and civilians, and then he was taken out of Voronezh. The new monument was erected only five years after the end of the war, and in 1956 the square received its modern name.
