The Transfiguration Cathedral
central square of Buturlinovka, Voronezh region, Russia
Description:
The Transfiguration Cathedral in Buturlinovka is its main spiritual landmark. The five-domed red brick temple stands on the main city square. The cathedral was built relatively recently - at the very end of the 19th century on the site of the stone church that used to be here before. The architects of the building are V.V. Steinovsky, D.V. Znobishin and S.L. Myslovsky. Funds for construction were collected by the whole world. The construction was carried out for 7 years and it involved many workers gathered throughout the region.
The Transfiguration Cathedral is considered the largest monument of architecture of the 19th century in the Voronezh region. Notable is not only its architectural composition, but also the interior decoration. The iconostasis and other interior details are made of marble, the walls are painted under marble. It looks majestic and unusually beautiful.
In the 30s of the 20th century, the temple repeated the fate of most churches in Russia: it was closed and turned into a warehouse. During the war, Soviet tanks were repaired. In the 90s of the last century, the cathedral was returned to the church. Restoration work continues here today.
