Vyborg. A journey into the Middle Ages.
Description:
Vyborg is a northern outpost founded by Swedes in the Middle Ages. A city with an amazing history, there is still debate about the time of its foundation and the personality of this hero. The official date of foundation is considered to be 1293, but it is established that these shores have long been inhabited by the Karelians, and the history of the city until 1293 is rather vague. It is connected with the ancient Slavic prince Gostomysl.
The history of Vyborg is a history of raids and conquests. If the city had not been taken by Russian troops in the Northern War in 1710, if it had not been for this Victoria of Peter I, it is not known how the fate of St. Petersburg and all of Russia would have developed.
The most unique attraction of Vyborg is the medieval Vyborg Castle and the St. Olaf Tower. Often held inside the castle, knightly tournaments and festivals take you back to the Middle Ages.
Not only tourists are attracted by preserved medieval symbols, many famous films were shot in Vyborg, for example, “Sannikov Land”, films about Vikings.
The central square is decorated with the beautiful Transfiguration Cathedral, built by N. Lviv, Russian Leonardo da Vinci, by decree of Catherine the Great.
The real gem was Monrepo Park - my inspiration, a park created on the bay in the style of an English landscape park.
Vyborg is located 120 km from St. Petersburg, leads to it the Scandinavia road of remarkable quality. The history of Vyborg is closely intertwined with the history of the Principality of Finland, with the history of the unfamiliar Finnish War and the legendary personality of Baron Mannerheim.
