Vyborg

Clock Tower of the Cathedral

Vyborg, Fortress Street, 5

Description:

The cathedral in Vyborg experienced a difficult history, in which it was constantly rebuilt, restored from fires, then assigned the status of a Lutheran church, then an Orthodox one. The building was destroyed during the Russo-Finnish War of 1940. The cathedral was destroyed, and now, as if a resistant tin soldier, an old clock tower towers above its ruins.

Built in the XV century, this tower still informs about the time of day, before it was done with the help of bells, now with the help of a clockwork mechanism, which is watched by a watchmaker and a caretaker who lives in the house opposite, who knows the history of the tower is no worse than the history of his life.

It’s just as amazing how the tower looks like in the city. Amazing view from the tower itself. Old buildings, a castle, cathedrals and two more towers – this panorama will awaken in any romance.

In Vyborg, you can really touch the history and feel part of it, especially after visiting this tower.
