Vyborg

City market

Vyborg, Market Square and nab. 40th anniversary of Komsomol

Description:

The city market in Vyborg has decorated the city for a little more than a hundred years and provides residents with everything they need. Architect Karl Segerstadt designed the building in such a way that it looked harmoniously with the towering Vyborg Castle.

The two-storey building is a vivid example of northern romantic modernity, however, due to the smaller number of details, which decorated the buildings of those times, it looks more restrained. Thanks to the clock tower, merchants knew exactly when it was time to go home. At the beginning of the XX century, the market had a very impressive size and was famous for the largest in Finland. During the war, the building, like the whole city, was significantly damaged and even after a detailed restoration, unfortunately, did not acquire its original appearance. It is not surprising that the building today functions as a market, because it is not only the project of a talented architect, but also the brainchild of a real engineer.
