Vyborg

Round tower

Market Square, 1, Vyborg, Lo, 188800

Description:

The circular tower is part of medieval defensive fortifications. It was built in 1547.

The diameter of the Round Tower is about 21 meters, the thickness of the walls is 3-4 meters. In 1609, the Vyborg Treatise on military assistance was signed here between King Charles IX of Sweden and Tsar Vasily Shuisky.

The tower gradually lost its military importance. It was used as an arsenal, and here they charged a fee from visitors. In the XIX century, the tower was going to be demolished, but it was leased by a large company for a flour warehouse, which saved it from demolition. During the Second World War, the municipality gathered in the Round Tower, and food was organized for those who worked on restoration work.

Today there is a famous restaurant in the tower.
