Vyborg

Old cathedral

Russia, Leningrad region, Vyborg district, Vyborg, Podgornaya street

Description:

The old cathedral in Vyborg is the preserved ruins of an ancient temple founded in the XV century. Catholics have lived on the territory of Vyborg since the XIV century, as evidenced by historical records. They built a wooden temple, which burned down during the military siege, the next building was stone and belonged to the Lutheran religion. The temple was badly damaged during the Northern War and it seemed impossible to recreate it. However, the cathedral was repaired and consecrated into an Orthodox church.

Since 1918, the temple again returned to Lutheran believers, but did not last long - in 1939 it was destroyed as a result of hostilities with the Finns. The temple was not subject to restoration, only its ruins have survived to our time.
