Alexeyev Monastery
a.I. Sharkov street, 27, Uglich city, Yaroslavl region
Description:
In the seventies of the IV century at the entrance to Yaroslavl was a small but picturesque hill. According to legend, the monk Andrian, on behalf of the Moscow Metropolitan, chose this place for the construction of a new monastery called Alekseevsky. In 1371, construction was successfully completed in just a few months. The local authorities decided to make it an advanced defensive post in front of the city.
However, the post had a vulnerability - it was built entirely of wood. Therefore, in the XVI century it was decided to erect white stone walls around the monastery. Unfortunately, this did not save the monastery from ruin and burning during the Polish invasion. Legends say that the monks refused to cooperate with the invaders, and then many of them were buried alive in the ground.
Later, the memory of the faithful sons of the Fatherland was immortalized by the construction of the Assumption Church of the Blessed Virgin. It was nicknamed Wonderful for its original symbolic architecture: the domes of the church are made in the shape of a trident. The right entrance is crowned by a cut porch. There is a refectory next to the church.
Some time later, in 1681, the Church of John the Forerunner was erected in the same complex, which looks no less beautiful.
Now the monastery complex is located in Uglich, on Sharkov Street.
