Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker in the Ruben City

8, Yaroslavl, Yaroslavl region, Russia

Description:

The Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker, located on the territory of the Rubbed City in Yaroslavl, is one of the most perfect ensembles of religious architecture of the seventeenth century. Erected in 1965 on the donations of the Posad people engaged in shipbuilding, the temple includes a composition of a columnless five-headed four, a refectory and eight-sided tent bell tower, crowned with a gilded dome with a cross. Despite the modest size, by then standards, the church looks very organic. Visually, it gives an impression of its weightlessness. It's like she's ready to float into the clouds overnight.

The deliberate modesty of the decoration, as it were, emphasizes ascetic poetics, making one think about the true meaning of holiness and service to the Creator. The true intention of architects is an attempt to convey to parishioners the idea that true beauty lies in the unity of divine and worldly principles, and not in ostentatious luxury.

From Moscow, you can get to the Temple by car on the federal highway M8, turning right after the bridge over the Korotosl River. From the Moscow station in Yaroslavl you can walk (distance 3.2 km), get by bus or minibus.
