The Chapel of Our Lady of Kazan
Kotoslny Abbey, Yaroslavl, Yaroslavl Region
Description:
This chapel is depicted on a 1000-ruble bill, but it is not only original. The structure is symbolically reminiscent of a rocket. The project was executed by architect Georgy Lvovich Dainov. The construction was completed in 1997. The construction of the chapel of Our Lady of Kazan was timed to the 385th anniversary of the release of the people’s militia to Moscow.
Its location was successfully chosen, it stands on the bank of the Kotorosl River in the very center of Yaroslavl. Nearby there is another attraction - the Holy Gate of the Transfiguration Monastery. It was in this monastery in 1612 that the headquarters of the people’s militia was organized, which stopped in Yaroslavl on the way from Nizhny Novgorod to Moscow. During this period, the militia increased their ranks and finally armed. Yaroslavl at that time was actually the capital of the Russian state.
The beautiful iconic building is not only a symbol of Christianity, but also a monument to the events of those years. Inside it on the slab is inscribed: “People’s militia from grateful descendants”, immediately in the form of stained glass, the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, with whom the militia came to Moscow.
This event took place on July 27, 1612 and marked the beginning of the liberation of the country from the Swedish and Polish invaders.
