Yoshkar-Ola

Holy City of Kitezh on the Mari land (or Orthodox Yoshkar-Ola)

Description:

On the tour you will get acquainted with the history of Orthodoxy on the Mari land and the history of the fortress, founded in 1584 by decree of the Russian Tsar Fyodor Ioannovich.

The fortress was an outpost of Russian troops on the Mari land and was given its name - "Tsarev city on Kokshag".

The city has changed its name several times. The modern name is the city of Yoshkar-Ola.

Yoshkar-Ola is a city with its Orthodox history, beautiful temples with a deep historical heritage, with shrines found on the Mari land, and with its heavenly patrons. We will talk about all this on the tour.

On the tour you will admire the preserved restored temples of the Ascension of the Lord, the Trinity Cathedral, the Tikhvin Church. These stone temples were built in the 18th century on the charitable funds of the merchants of Tsarevokokshaysk (the name Yoshkar-Ola) and were restored at the turn of the 20-21 century.

Touch the history of temples and see the temple complexes, which were revived on the site of blown up and destroyed in Soviet times. This is the Vkhodjerusalem temple and the magnificent Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.

You will visit the Kremlin, Patriarchal Square, where there is a unique dynamic composition of the “Apostles” (as it is called by the people) or, more correctly, the implementation of the biblical story “The Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem”.

And on the Obolensky-Nogotkov Square, where every hour on the tower under the battle of the Clock comes another dynamic composition - "Donkey with the icon of Troyeruchnitsa".

On the tour you will also learn the history of the Mari people, some of whose representatives have preserved their religion and, according to the popular science magazine GEO, they are called “the last pagans of Europe”. We will talk about the peaceful coexistence of the two main confessions - Orthodoxy and the traditional Mari religion, and mutual respect between the two peoples.

Orthodox churches and cathedrals, revived and restored on old historical sites, new temple complexes, unusual architecture of houses and buildings of the city, the river embankment, the azure surface of the Kokshagi River in summer, with the domes of Orthodox churches reflected in it - this is all Yoshkar-Ola.

“The Holy City of Kitezh” on the Mari land – this analogy was brought by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, seeing the blasphemy of the restored churches in the ancient city, having visited Yoshkar-Ola in 2016.

Kitezh is a fabulous city, a utopia, but everyone wants to find such a city.
