Broughton Bay

North Kuril city district, Sakhalin region, Russia.

Description:

Broughton Bay is a small bay located in the northeastern part of Simoushire Island. The entrance to the bay is located between Cape Storozhev and Cape Soviet. Open to the north, enters the island for almost 6 kilometers. The width of the entrance is 250 meters, with a depth of more than 200 meters.

On the shore of the bay is Mount Uratman, 678 meters high, along the slopes of which there is vegetation of the taiga type, descending directly to the water, without forming a beach. Unlike the bay, the entrance is rather shallow.

In the northern part of the bay was the village of Craterny, on the basis of which in Soviet times it was supposed to build a military base of the Pacific Ocean fleet, and a little later a plan was developed for the construction of a geological permanent burial ground for nuclear waste. At the moment, the island and the coast of the bay are not inhabited.

The bay is named after the famous British navigator William Broughton.
