Crater Bay
North Kuril city district, Sakhalin region, Russia.
Description:
The crater bay is located in the southern part of the shore of Yankicha Island, the Ushishishire Islands group. The entrance to the bay is between Kolpak rock and Cape Craterny. The bay enters the island for 1 kilometer, open to the south. The width of the entrance is 300 meters, a depth of about 56 meters, an area of about 0.7 square kilometers.
Directly in the bay is the active volcano Ushishishir, 388 meters high. On its slopes grows vegetation taiga type, which descends directly to the water, while not forming a beach. Unlike the bay itself, the entrance to it is rather shallow. Also in the center of the bay there are two islands, 72 and 37 meters high.
Like the whole island, the coast of the bay is not inhabited. The height of the tides here reaches 1.8 meters.
The fauna and flora of Craterna Bay are isolated from the environment. Sea urchins are found at its bottom, 6 new species of animals were discovered here, and in 1988 the bay became a biological reserve. In 1989, a scientific film was made about her called “Mysteries of Craternoy Bay”.
