Description:
Yankich Island is one of two islands of Ushishishir, a group of islands of the Kuril archipelago. The island is part of the North Kuril district, the Sakhalin region, the Russian Federation. The island is currently uninhabited.
The island was once a refuge for the ancient Ainu people. In 1875-1945, the island was part of Japan, then again passed to Russia.
Yankicha Island is of volcanic origin, about 3 kilometers in diameter. In the center of the island, a volcanic caldera forms Craternaya Bay. The edges of the crater, which have survived, form a ringed ridge, with the active volcano Ushishishir located inside, 388 meters high. The last eruption here was recorded in 1884. There are also many fumaroles and thermal springs on the island.
The island is home to many species of birds, of which there are quite rare, such as a large snail, a red-horned horse, a horse and a winter man. Also, foxes were brought here, and soon a nursery was organized.
According to the results of studies, it was revealed that in the vicinity of the island exceeded the dose of oxygen consumption, and its waters are saturated with phosphates.
