Sakhalin Oblast, North Kuril District, Paramushir Island
Description:
Ebeko volcano is located in the north of the island of Paramushir in the Sakhalin region. The height of the volcano is 1156 meters. The volcano has three craters in which thermal springs, hot lakes and solfatars are located. It is composed of rocks such as basalts and andesites. It is an active volcano, one of the most active in the Kuril Islands. Eruptions of the volcano Ebeko occurred repeatedly.
Volcanic eruptions have been recorded since 1793. The volcano's last activity was in February 2013, when it ejected a cloud of gas to a height of about 200 meters. During eruptions, the main danger is represented by sulfur and hydrogen sulfide vapors, ash emissions, volcanic mud flows. Many side craters of the volcano are centers of thermal and fumarole activity.
According to studies conducted in the 1950s and 1960s, groundwater extracts elements such as aluminum, iron and manganese from volcanic rocks. On the slopes of the volcano flow numerous streams connecting to the river. The river brings to the Sea of Okhotsk about 65 tons of dissolved aluminum and about 35 tons of iron.
