Japanese Tory Monument on Sakhalin Island
vzmorye village, Dolinsky district, Sakhalin region, Russia
Description:
The white marble Tori Gate, located near the village of Vzmorye, is the last Japanese monument left on the island of Sakhalin. There are even Japanese hieroglyphs on the gate. Previously, behind this gate stood the Shinto temple of Tomarioru Jinja, built in 1922. The Tories were built by the Japanese near their temples. To enter the temple, you had to enter through such a gate.
Now behind the gate cascade are flat terraces with the remains of columns and marble slabs. Some people recall that there used to be many such Tory gates on the island, but in Soviet times they were deliberately destroyed to erase the memory of the Japanese. Miraculously preserved these gates, standing alone on the beach.
