Zaraysk - ancient city
Description:
50 kilometers from Kolomna is the beautiful city of Zaraysk. Its first mention in the chronicle dates back to 1146 - Zaraysk is a year older than Moscow. This amazing city has more than 30 registered names - Krasny, Nogovogorodok, Gorodok-on-Sturgeon, Zarazsk, Zarazetsk, Zarayevsk and many others. Such a number of names is due to the fact that very often the city took on the raids of the enemies of the Russian land - it was often burned to the ground, but nevertheless, like a fabulous Phoenix bird, it was reborn from the ashes. In order to somehow protect against enemies from 1528 to 1531, the Zaraysky Kremlin was built. At the moment, it is the smallest Kremlin in Russia: its area is only 2.8 hectares. But it's preserved completely. Since the XVII century Zaraysk has become a major trading city, with an extensive posad. The estates of rich Zaray merchants, as well as buildings made at their expense, are still preserved.
In Zaraysk there is a holy source - the White Well, with which the icon of Nikola Zaraysky is associated. There is the purest cold water that you can take with you, and also bathe in it (at the source there is a font). On the way back you can visit the small but very interesting town of Lukhovitsa.
