Zaraysk

Zaraysk - Red Town

Description:

What a wonderful name - Zaraysk! What a sad story that gave birth to the current name of the city!
During the tour, you will learn why the city has such an unusual name and why it was previously called the Red Town. The city is located in a picturesque place on the right tributary of the Oka - the river Sturgeon.

Zaraysky Kremlin, the oldest landmark of the city, was built in 1531. At that time, the city was not Zaraysk, but the Red Town. The Kremlin was built according to all the rules of fortification art with a clear geometric construction in plan. The stone citadel has seven towers, the thickness of the fortress walls is 3 m, the height is about 9 m. The towers have three tiers of battle. Zaraysky Kremlin remained the only one in the suburbs, which is fully preserved in its original form. On the territory of the Kremlin there are two important temples of Zaraysk: Nikolsky (17th century) and the Cathedral of John the Forerunner (early 20th century). St. Nicholas Cathedral was built in 1681 on the site of an ancient wooden church (1225), in which Korsun missionaries led by Eustathius the Elder brought to the village of Krasnoe (now Zaraysk) an icon of St. Nicholas. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The icon was in great reverence in the temples of the Zaray Kremlin - Nikolsky and John-Predechensky. In the St. Nicholas Church, starting from the 13th century, an outstanding literary monument of Ancient Russia was created - the cycle "Tales of Nicholas Zarazsky".
