Curonian Spit: Dune edge and bird paradise
Description:
The Curonian Spit is a unique fragile creation of nature with sandy and forest landscapes. It was created by the sea, wind, sand and laborious labor of man. And today, people continue to work to preserve the Spit. This magnificent cultural landscape, which opens before us today, is the interaction of nature and man for several centuries.
The history of the Curonian Spit is dramatic and dates back about 6000 years. A narrow sand spit 98 km long and 380 to 4000 m wide separates the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Bay. A few thousand years ago, the spit consisted of several islands. Later, when the process of forming the spit as a whole ended, it gradually covered with rich forests. Wood has always attracted people as a valuable commodity and building material, so by the 17th century the forest spit was emptied and the huge sand dunes began their movement, burying more than a dozen villages under them. It will be a long time before a person realizes that if he does not begin to fight the all-consuming dunes, he will have nowhere to live.
They say, "All roads lead to Rome," and we have the Dancing Forest! A trip to the Curonian Spit is impossible without a walk in the mysterious forest. The place where strangely shaped trees surprise travelers from all over the world is also famous for the fact that it was here that the famous glider Ferdinand Schultz created his world records. . And then the story continues on the Curonian Spit... Welcome back!
