"Terrible" Seawater

Description:

While preparing a new tour of Zelenogradsk, I came across an amazing engraving of the English cartoonist Thomas Rowlandson “Sea water – fresh water” in 1800. The engraving reflects the horror of people before sea water in the era of the emergence of sea resorts.

Interestingly, the author himself is a good example of the fact that money spoils creative people: after receiving an inheritance, Rowlandson stopped creating, just living a fortune, but soon, fascinated by gambling, became impoverished. He began to write again in order to replenish his budget, drawing cartoons.

The engraving is in the collection of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, until 1918 it was in the collection of the Baryatinsky princes.
