Lake Kivu

Description:

Kivu is a lake in Central Africa, on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the East African Rift Valley, one of the Great African Lakes. Lake Kivu is 89 km long and 48 km wide.

It is known for its huge deposits of methane at the bottom, which, according to many scientists, represent a “time bomb”. Any earthquake or volcanic activity would be fatal to the 2 million people living in the region. They can die from both methane explosions and carbon dioxide suffocation. But there are also positive aspects – unlike other freshwater reservoirs in Africa, Lake Kivu has clean and clear water in which there are no parasites and other contagion. Here you can swim, and on the shores there are many hotels and resorts.
