Retba Pink Lake
Description:
Pink Lake Retba is a famous lake located in Senegal, 20 kilometers from Cape Verde. The feature of Retba is the color of water, ranging from purple to scarlet.
The area of the lake is three square kilometers, and the maximum depth is three meters. The color of Retba is not created artificially, but is caused by the presence of a large number of cyanobacteria in the water. In the dry season, the shade is especially noticeable, at other times of the year the color becomes pink.
Lake Retba is also known for its high salt content, which is approximately equal to the salt content of the Dead Sea. The extraction of the necessary salt has been carried out here since 1970.
Long ago, Lake Retba was the final destination of the Paris-Dakar Rally.
