The baptism of the Lord (Holy Manifestation)
Description:
In Serbian lands, it is customary to eat beans from Christmas Eve and nothing else. The priest and two or three specially selected disciples go home and consecrate the water. Sometimes people greet each other: “Christ was baptized!” - "Really baptized." On this day the winds are crossed. The wind that blew more on Baptism will blow more strongly throughout the year. In the Church put a cross in the water: if the water freezes, the year will be healthy.
On the Epiphany in the churches consecrate water. In some places in Serbia, young people run to the river to grab a cross made of ice or wood. Whoever reaches it first will receive a reward from the church.
People believe that the heavens are opened and God fulfills human desires. The salutation was received: “Christ has appeared, indeed he has appeared.” If the northern wind blows on Epiphany, the year will be healthy, if the southern one - then the year will be fruitful, but painful. If it is cloudy or snowing, the year will be fertile, if it is clear - summer will be dry, if it rains - there will be flooding in the spring.
